Alpaca Farms of Rhode Island

Alpacas are fiber-producing members of the camelid family, and are one of the oldest domesticated breeds of livestock. Their fleece, once reserved for Incan royalty, is one of the world's most elegant natural fibers. As soft as cashmere and warmer, lighter and stronger than wool, it comes in more natural colors than any other fiber producing animal - white, cream, all shades of silver-grey, rose grey, fawn, chocolate brown and true black.

Alpaca clothing is extremely comfortable to wear. The absence of lanolin and other oils in the fleece and its extraordinary fineness mean that alpaca garments are both hypoallergenic and luxuriously soft on your skin.

In addition to their curious and friendly nature, alpacas are environmentally friendly, ideally suited to small acreage, and can become part of a sustainable small farm enterprise. Alpaca farms are well established in Rhode Island, and breeders have formed an active and supportive community.

The best way to learn more about alpacas is to visit an alpaca farm or ranch. These Rhode Island breeders will be happy to answer your questions and share their experiences.
